Safety Tips for Runners and Walkers

If you are a runner or hiker please take a moment to review the following simple safety recommendations. They are just as important as a good pair of running or walking shoes. Keep safe while enjoying your favorite exercise routes!

Before you leave:

  • Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return.
  • Make sure friends and family know of your favorite exercise routes.
  • Know where telephones are located along the course or consider carrying a cellular phone.
  • Carry your driver's license or ID card. Include medical alert tags or information.
  • Wear reflective material.

While you‘re exercising:

  • Stay alert. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are.
  • Don't wear headsets. Listen to your surroundings
  • Exercise in familiar areas
  • Run against traffic so you can observe approaching vehicles.
  • Don't run at night. If you run late at night or early in the morning, consider these tips.
  • Make sure people can see you.
  • Wear a vest with reflective tape.
  • Keep alert.

If you are away from home
