InvestigationsThe Investigative unit is responsible for secondary follow-up investigations for all types of crimes. The most common cases investigated by Detectives include: deaths of a suspicious nature, sexual assault, robbery, burglary, theft, fraud and identity theft. The Detectives also investigate crimes committed by juveniles and crimes committed against juveniles as well as providing assistance to at-risk-youth in the community. When an officer is assigned to the Investigative unit as a detective, they receive specialized training above and beyond the advanced training they received as a patrol officer. A new Detective is placed in a three-year training plan to advance their knowledge and skills. Some of the training courses a Lake Forest Park Detective completes include but are not limited to: Crime Scene Investigation, Homicide Investigation, Interviewing and Interrogation, Fraud Investigations, Surveillance Techniques, Death Investigation, and Criminal Investigation. At the Lake Forest Park Police Department, officers are assigned to the Investigative unit for three years after competing in a competitive process with other officers who apply to become a Detective. A Detective's assignment may be extended one year, based upon performance, totaling four years as a Detective. At the end of their assignment, the Detective rotates back to Patrol, creating more opportunity for lateral movement within the police department.
