The Patrol Division deters and detects crime, apprehends violators, and renders other services designed to provide public protection, including drug enforcement. Each officer is expected to perform the duties of Community Policing Officers, working with the residents in their assigned districts to identify and resolve community problems. The Patrol Division carries out preventative patrols (vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols), enforces traffic regulations, responds to calls for service, and conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of crimes and community problems. Officers respond to “Extra Patrol Requests” from residents to ensure that complaints regarding traffic violators and other issues are addressed.
Canine K-9 Unit:

The Lake Forest Park Police Department Canine Unit is made up of Officer Harden and his K-9 partner “Dakota”. Dakota is a narcotics dogs. Narcotic dogs are responsible for locating narcotics that have been hidden in houses, cars, and buried in yards. The dogs are also used to obtain search warrants. Dakota is trained in virtually all types of Narcotics, ranging from Marijuana to Prescription Drugs.
Canine works with the Narcotics Unit, Anti-Crime Teams, Patrol, and generally work exclusively night hours. If the situation does not allow the use of the police dog, canine officers provide regular patrol and assist with patrol arrests. LFPPD canine also is called to assist outside agencies in the area when requested for its services.
In some cases, LFPPD canine goes into places and spaces that would be dangerous for the officer to enter. Using their keen sense of smell, eyesight, and hearing, dogs can be effective in conditions of darkness or reduced light where officers either could not, or could only do so at substantial risk to their personal safety.

The Department maintains an officer in the schools, the DARE/GREAT School Resource Officer. This officer teaches the Drug Resistance and Education and Gang Resistance and Education programs in the city's two elementary schools and provides assistance to staff in dealing with troubled youth and other problems that arise in the schools.
A uniformed police officer teaches the 17-week curriculum. The S.R.O. program has proven itself to be an effective drug prevention program.
The S.R.O. officer spends 45 minutes each week in the 6th Grade classrooms teaching lessons such as: “Considering Consequences,” “Learning Resistance Techniques,” “Building Self-Esteem,” “Reducing Violence,” “Resisting Gang and Youth Violence,” and “Making Decisions About Risky Behavior.” A relationship is formed between the students and the officer, as the officer eats lunch with students and participates in recess activities. The students recognize the S.R.O. officer as a true friend and share many experiences and problems with him.

Traffic Unit:
Top
The Lake Forest Park Police Department deploys a traffic officer to assist patrol officers in the enforcement of traffic regulations in targeted areas, where accident rates are high, or where there are safety concerns near schools and in neighborhoods.
The Lake Forest Park Police Department Traffic Unit is committed to the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians within the City of Lake Forest Park. The approach used to deliver this level of service includes education, engineering, and enforcement. The ultimate goal of the Traffic Unit is to fulfill the Department's Mission Statement by creating a safe environment and to work with the community to solve traffic problems.
The Lake Forest Park Police Department Traffic Unit employs the philosophy of Traffic Orientated Problem Solving. A “Traffic Service Request” is generated as the result of a citizen's complaint involving a traffic problem. An officer or engineer is assigned and is responsible for analyzing the request and taking or recommending the appropriate action.
The Traffic Unit uses directed patrols, which is patrol time directed specifically at high accident locations or as the result of a recurring traffic problem within the City. The accident rates or unsafe driving behavior may be reduced by high enforcement or by deploying engineering measures. Additionally, the Traffic Unit deploys a Speed Watch Trailer designed to educate drivers on speed limits and their current speed. School zones are often selected to remind drivers to slow down, and to increase the safety of children around area schools. The Speed Watch Trailer is an education tool, and does not issue citations.
Citizens are encouraged to call the Traffic Unit with any questions, comments or concerns regarding traffic matters in the City of Lake Forest Park.
