Fall Yard Care and Leaf Disposal Information

How to dispose of your leaves?

Homeowners are responsible for the leaves that fall into their yard. There are several options about how to use or dispose of your leaves.

Add leaves to your compost pile or use in your garden

It is best to shred your leaves before adding to a compost pile, especially if you have large leaves from trees like a big leaf maple. You can shred your leaves with your leaf blower. Most of them have a reverse function that allows you to suck up the leaves and mulch them at the same time.

You can also use your lawn mower with a collection bag to collect and mulch leaves. Then add your shredded leaves to your compost pile or put them around your garden. Mulched leaves work well to reduce weeds. In your garden or in your compost pile, either way you are creating great gardens.

Watch for Natural Yard Days Coming in April 2008

The goal of this annual program is to encourage residents of King County and surrounding areas to practice natural yard care. This is done through discounts on natural yard care product sales in the spring each year.

Put Your Leaves in the Yard Waste

Subscribers to Allied Waste can put out up to 360 gallons of yard debris each pick up period. You can put out your regular yard waste container that has a 90-gallon capacity. In addition, you can put your extra yard waste in rigid containers with handles and lids (32 gallons and 50 lb. limit) or in large heavy paper bags or reusable polywoven bags. Mark the bags, boxes or privately owned cans “Yard Waste”.

It is Illegal to Blow Your Leaves into the Street or Stream

It is illegal to blow your leaves into the street, roadside culverts, or into the streams or stream buffers. Anyone who does so violates Title 8.04.050 of the Lake Forest Park Municipal Code and is guilty of a misdemeanor. Please be sure to remove debris from stormwater grates to ensure they function properly.
