Public Hearing on Changes to the Home Occupation Ordinance
The City Council will be holding a public hearing on the proposed changes to the home occupation ordinance on October 25 at 7:30 pm in the City Council Chambers, 17425 Ballinger Way NE.
Last year, Economic Development Commission proposed changes to the home occupation regulations in the zoning code in order to encourage more home businesses to operate in compliance with City regulations and address regulations that the Commission felt were overly restrictive. The primary change is to increase the allowable area of a residence that can be used to conduct the home occupation from 300 square feet to 500 square feet. The Planning Commission reviewed the proposed changes and found them to be warranted and is recommending that the Council consider adoption.
Council initially discussed the proposed amendments at the July 26, 2007 study session. Economic Development Commission (EDC) Chair Rick Bungay provided background on the EDC's recommended changes during the September 13th. The Council also received a summary of the EDC's survey of home business owners that was completed prior to the EDC's recommendation. Several amendments were approved by the Council at the October 11, 2007 meeting.
The SEPA (environmental review) process on the ordinance was completed on August 24th and no appeals were filed. The State Community Trade and Economic Development Department (CTED) notification period ended on September 29, 2007.
