Human Services Presents First Annual Good Neighbor Awards

Karen Sluiter, Chair of the Human Services Commission, and Mayor Hutchinson presented the first annual Good Neighbor Awards. The Human Services Commission established the Good Neighbor Award to honor exceptional people whose helpful acts have been done without seeking or receiving recognition.

The thirteen 2005 Good Neighbor Award recipients are: Carolyn Barden, who manages and maintains the children’s garden at Animal Acres; Grace Binder and Erin Mullany who arranged for neutering of neighborhood feral cats; Mamie Bolender who works with the natural environment; Gordon Brown, a neighborhood ambassador, who welcomes new people and makes people feel at home; Cindy Dyck, who dedicates her time in support of Brookside Elementary School; Kris Warmuth Fahlstrom, who provides her neighbors assistance without asking; Alin Harmon, who quickly helped a neighbor in need get to the hospital; Teri Howatt, who works countless hours on the City website and the farmers market; Connie Olstad, who organizes her neighborhood for the Night Out Against Crime and actively participates in Friends of the Lake Forest Park Library; Linda Radach, whose efforts create a neighborhood of interconnections and care; Jeff Weissman, of Great Harvest Bakery who is a huge community booster; Florence Wright, who devotes countless hours to community service as a City commissioner, garden tour committee member and teaches English to immigrants.

The names of Good Neighbor honorees will appear on the leaves of a tree stitched by quilter and Human Services Commission member Deborah Weidenbacher. It will be displayed at City Hall.

“We are honored indeed to have citizens like these in our community. They make Lake Forest Park a special place to live and work,” said Mayor Hutchinson.
