November, 2007: Hunger in our community
From the Computer of Mayor Dave
Lake Forest Park has hidden hungry children. In Lake Forest Park one in five students in the Shoreline schools and 13% of Brookside and LFP Elementary students receive free and reduced price meals. Families may rely on school programs, programs for women, infants and children, senior programs, and local food banks to help through difficult times. Right here in town, between 2001 and 2003 there has been a 19% increase in the number of people on food stamps. Many more individuals receive WIC and Senior Nutrition vouchers. Last year Meals on Wheels delivered 33,614 meals in Lake Forest Park.
Thanksgiving is a great time to be with friends and family. It is also a good time to think about getting food to our hungry neighbors. Food Lifeline will have a collection barrel at City Hall and one at Third Place Commons during November.
