The financial health of the City has improved substantially over the last 10 years. My 2006 proposed budget lays the groundwork for continued fiscal strength and includes a positive 5-year projection.
The programs included in the 2006 budget highlight a number of priorities for the coming year. These include: a proposal to create a traffic safety corridor along NE 178th Street in the vicinity of Brookside School; continued work to increase our emergency preparedness; extending our network of public sewers to areas that need them; implementing the policies of the Comprehensive Plan with continued vigilance toward preserving our existing lot sizes while, at the same time, accommodating the density required under the Growth Management Act; and continued readiness for potential redevelopment of the mall in our town center.
Municipal financing is a challenge. Working together, the City Council and I have built a solid financial base for the City with sufficient reserves to protect our vital services. We are meeting the challenge of providing high quality services to our citizens while ensuring a healthy fiscal future. I invite and encourage you to find out more about your Citys budget by attending the budget workshops that will be held throughout the month of November at our Council meetings on November 3, 10 and 17.
