I hope some of you will think about becoming city commissioners next year. There are eight commissions: Civil Service, Economic Development, Environmental Quality, Human Services, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Public Safety, and Transportation. There is also the Library Advisory Committee and the Web Team.Commissioners develop an annual work plan. The work plan directs their activities. For example, the Public Safety Commission is working on how to acquire a portable defibrillator; the Planning Commission plans to work on design standards for the town center; the Economic Development Commission is working on implementation of the Sustaining a Livable LFP issues; the Environmental Quality Commission is working on an educational program about the environment; the Human Services Commission is working on developing a youth committee; and Parks and Recreation Commission is continuing to work on the Grace Cole Nature Park.
Being a commissioner is an important part of city government. You will work on issues that are important to the City. You will have a hand in drafting policies and making the City responsive to the needs of the people who live here. The City Council refers many items to the commissions for review and recommendation. Every March one third of the commissioners’ terms are complete, and I am looking for people who want to serve. Please send me an email with your resume or a letter of interest that I can share with the Council. I will be in contact with you and we will meet with the chair of that commission to talk about your role as a commissioner. The City will have a display at the volunteer fair “Work of the Heart” with more information about our commissions at Third Place Commons, February 12, 2005.
