| October, 2004: Finding Consensus Amid Conflict From the Computer of Mayor Dave |
|||||
| There is a broad and deep consensus around City goals. Sometimes when we are implementing our goals, we have disagreements. The Sustaining a Livable LFP Task Force recommended apartments and condominiums be included in the future development, and walking/dining areas should enhance and support the theme of meeting places that Third Place Books/Commons have created. These recommendations came out of three community forums. Secondly, the Burke-Gilman Trail issue brought emotional reactions from many. I believe that at the root of this apparent conflict, there is a consensus. Everyone wants to improve the safety of the trail and everyone would like to see improvements that enhance safety and maintain the values of the City whether they be home owner, bike user, pedestrian, runner, or skater. What this tells me is that we must be patient and learn to negotiate with each other, and recognize each others interests in the process. As a functioning community we must go after the greater good for all if we are to operate effectively as a community. Thats my opinion. |
