September, 2004: The City's Comprehensive Plan News
From the Computer of Mayor Dave
One of the key issues for any city is the development of its Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan is the basic policy document for the city related to land use. The current Comprehensive Plan was completed in 1995. The Planning Commission has been working on the draft Comprehensive Plan update for over two years and held a series of public meetings regarding various elements of the draft.

Last month the Planning Commission held a public hearing on the Draft Comprehensive Plan Update. There were two issues that seemed to be of concern to citizens: a proposal to change the land use designation for some low-density areas to higher density, and the requirements of the Growth Management Act regarding density in general and housing targets. The Planning Commission has evaluated the comments and will forward the Draft Comprehensive Plan Update to the City Council. It is the role of the City Council to take final action on the Update.

Burke-Gilman Trail Update

I also want to let you know that more information will be forthcoming on the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Redevelopment of the Burke-Gilman Trail. Since the last TownCrier, I have worked with the City Council on this issue. Since the Burke-Gilman Trail is a King County facility, I feel that King County is the most appropriate jurisdiction to host and staff a Citizens’ Advisory Committee. All of the applications I received for the proposed committee have been forwarded to King County for consideration.
