March, 2004: Bringing Salmon and Wildlife Back
From the Computer of Mayor Dave

Let’s bring the salmon and other wildlife back to our streams. Not very long ago Lake Forest Park’s creeks were filled with salmon and other fish. One long time resident recalls seeing spawning Sockeye crammed bank-to-bank on McAleer Creek. There are only a few fish left in our creeks now. Pesticides from lawns and gardens may be poisoning fish and other wildlife. A federal ruling last month restricted the use of dozens of pesticides including products such as Weed and Feed near salmon streams. Even if we do not live near a stream, rainwater can carry pesticides and fertilizers off our lawns into storm drains and into streams or lakes.

The City has been working to protect and restore our streams. Catch basin filters have been installed near busy streets to collect debris and oil from road runoff. Noxious weeds along park stream banks are being removed and replaced with shade bearing native plants. The parks and street crews avoid the use of pesticides and herbicides in city parks and streets.

We can all be good backyard stewards. It will help preserve our environment and set an example for the younger generation. Attend the Earth Friendly Garden Fair on Saturday, March 27 at Third Place Commons and learn practical tips from experts.
