The City Council and the Planning Commission have determined that, as a community, we need to look at the viability of our commercial areas, in particular the Towne Centre area. We are embarking on a study process that we are calling "Sustaining Lake Forest Park - A Strategic Plan for Sustaining a Livable Lake Forest Park".
The goals of the study are to: Create greater local choices for our citizens - both in terms of housing choices and commercial choices; encourage and improve pedestrian access and activity within and to our commercial areas; protect and enhance environmental resources; improve the aesthetics of our commercial areas, and encourage higher quality investment; and create a healthier economic base generating increased property value and sales revenue.
The Towne Centre is the commercial core of our City. It serves as the City's "main street" and plays a role as a community-gathering place and a venue for community events. Connecting individuals to their community by creating a strong sense of place is a function that can be enhanced through careful planning of the future of the Towne Centre.
Public involvement is a high priority within the study. There will be an Advisory Task Force working with a consultant team to provide recommendations to the Mayor and City Council as the study progresses. There will be several public forums, postings on the City's website and an e-mail and regular mail list to keep you informed.
